Detroit Lions early notes: Optimism on tight ends; Nick Fairley still in evaluation process

ALLEN PARK — Lions coach Jim Caldwell said he’s hopeful that one or two of the tight ends will be able to play on Sunday.

Joe Fauria (ankle) has missed five games while Brandon Pettigrew (foot) and Eric Ebron (hamstring) missed the last game.

All three tight ends practiced on a limited basis on Thursday. Fauria was the only one who also worked on Wednesday.

Caldwell wouldn’t say if Fauria had a better chance to go than the other two.

— Nick Fairley is still in evaluation process according to Caldwell. “Right now it’s non-surgical procedure at this point and we’ll see how it goes,’’ Caldwell said.

— Defensive end Andre Fluellen, who was signed on Monday, has stepped right back in, impressing Caldwell. “He hasn’t missed a beat, he really came to practice and did extremely well. We’re certainly happy to be able to get him,’’ Caldwell said. Fluellen was with the team throughout the offseason before being released in the final cuts.

— Captains for Sunday will be right tackle LaAdrian Waddle, defensive end George Johnson and Jeremy Ross on special teams.

— Caldwell again said today that wide receiver Corey Fuller is just scratching the surface. The coach is impressed with how Fuller has attached himself to Calvin Johnson trying to soak up all information.
