Detroit Lions notes: Captains to be named game by game

ALLEN PARK — Quick hits from Friday’s availability with the Detroit Lions:

— Jim Caldwell said he will name captains game by game because he has so many leaders. He will announce the first group on Saturday. Because there will be so many no one will wear the ‘C’.

— If safety James Ihedigbo (neck/knee) cannot play on Monday (Caldwell would give no hints either way), then rookie Jerome Couplin will start. Caldwell said he has faith in everyone on the roster. Ihedigbo has been out of practice all week and didn’t play in the final preseason game. Without giving specifics, Caldwell said Ihedigbo is improving. The coach also said if a guy doesn't practice all week, depending on the situation, he could still play on game day.

— Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said when they had Joique Bell on the Saints’ practice squad they tried to convince him to stay in New Orleans. Bell said he signed with Detroit because there was so much depth at running back with the Saints.

— Every game will be different for fullback Jed Collins, per Lombardi. Some will be determined by the flow of the game. “He’ll be significant,’’ Lombardi said.
