QB Matthew Stafford, who battled and beat out Daunte Culpepper for the starting role last season, is pleased to have veteran QB Shaun Hill join the Lions following a trade from the 49ers.

“I’m excited about it. I think he’s started 16 games in his career, so he’s got some starting experience. But, at the same time, I think he’s going to be a huge help for our team and a huge help for me,’’ Stafford said. “He’s a smart guy and knows Coach (Scott) Linehan’s offense.’’

Hill and Linehan worked together from 2002-2004 while with the Minnesota Vikings.

This year there will be no quarterback controversy. Stafford is No. 1.
