Still waiting on cuts
Still no official word from the Lions yet on who's been released, but I wouldn't expect too many unknowns to be added to the list. Chuck Darby and Michael Gaines, for instance, aren't going anywhere right now (though I've received emails suggesting the Lions should part ways with both), and I'd be mildly surprised if either of the quarterbacks were cut today.
Safety Dwight Smith, who's due a $500,000 roster bonus in the coming weeks and a $2.25-million salary next year, seems most likely to join Mike Furrey, Leigh Bodden, Dan Campbell and Edwin Mulitalo in looking for a new home, though that's pure speculation at this point.
As for quarterbacks Daunte Culpepper and Jon Kitna, I'd expect at least one to make it to training camp (along with Drew Stanton, Drew Henson and a draft pick in one round or another). I don't know which way the Lions are leaning on that front, but I do know a couple of players who feel the addition of Scott Linehan is a clear sign that Culpepper is the choice.
Regardless of whether the Lions have made that determination yet or not, we may see some clarity on the quarterback front by the end of the month. Both Culpepper ($2.5 million) and Kitna ($500,000) are due roster bonuses in the coming weeks, and Kitna at the very least has some trade value.
Then again, the Lions aren't going to find it easy to attract free agents without overpaying this offseason, and if they're leaning towards not taking a quarterback at the top of the draft they might want to keep both around and have them duel it out for one roster spot this spring.
