Mulitalo to be released

Edwin Mulitalo will join Mike Furrey, Leigh Bodden and others in the unemployment line next week.

Scott Smith, Mulitalo's agent, said the Lions have informed his client he will be released on Monday. Furrey and Bodden were the recipients of similar news last week, and other veterans are expected to be cut as well.

"They're going to release him," Smith said Friday. "Just they want to go a little younger at the position."

Mulitalo, one of the most likable personalities in the Lions locker room, drifted in and out of the starting lineup last season. He started the first five games at left guard, sat the next two weeks to rest, then made six more starts before ending the year on injured reserve with a minor ankle sprain.

The 34-year-old said two weeks ago his body felt great and he hoped to finish out his contract with Detroit. He was due to make $2 million next season.

Stephen Peterman, who started at right guard most of last year, will be an unrestricted free agent later this month, so the Lions could have two new starters on the interior line next year.

The Lions No. 1 OL target should be Ravens C-OG Jason Brown. He's young (26), at 320 lbs he fulfills the requirement of getting bigger on the OL, has playoff experience, and he handled Albert Haynesworth in both games the Ravens played against the Titans (Schwartz has likely see that film). Brown could play OG until the Lions decide to replace the undersized Raiola. Add in that Terrell Suggs, Ray Lewis, and Bart Scott are all unrestricted FAs, and you would think the Ravens couldn't afford to sign him.

If this isnt any indication the lions will select an OL like Andre Smith #1 in the draft I don't know what could make this anymore obvious. I hope all the people saying we will go with Stafford feel absolutley stupid when they hear and with the first selection of the 2009 NFL Draft the Detriot Lions select Andre Smith OL from Alabama Univeristy.
