Detroit Lions — Calvin Johnson returns to practice; weekly captains named

ALLEN PARK — Calvin Johnson returned to Lions practice Friday after sitting out the rest of the week with an injured ankle.

It’s expected he will play on Sunday vs. the Buffalo Bills. It is not known if he was limited in practice, but he was working during the small portion open to the media.

Johnson, who was limited on Sunday against the Jets, said on Wednesday that his ankle felt better than it had a week ago.

Jim Caldwell said on Friday morning that he expects WR Golden Tate to play on Sunday even though he was limited in practice on Thursday with a hamstring. Tate was working on Friday, but it was not known whether he was limited.

Caldwell would not be specific on whether Johnson or Joique Bell (concussion) will play. It’s expected Bell will be out. He was on the field Friday, but not practicing.
Others who did not practice on Friday include: TE Joe Fauria (ankle), RB Theo Riddick (hamstring) and LB Travis Lewis (quad).

Right tackle LaAdrian Waddle has had full practices all week and is expected to play Sunday for the first time since he injured his calf in the opening game.

Safety Don Carey is also expected to play after missing Sunday’s game with a hamstring.

Captains this week will be left guard Rob Sims, defensive end Jason Jones and punter Sam Martin.
