UPDATED: Detroit Lions draft DT Caraun Reid in fifth round

ALLEN PARK — Defensive tackle Caroun Reid (Princeton) was selected by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the NFL draft today. The Lions had traded back a dozen picks with Dallas for the 158th overall pick. Detroit also picked up a seventh-round pick.

The 6-foot-2 defensive tackle had two sacks in the Senior Bowl. On the final day of bowl practice he wowed scouts by putting linemen on the ground in six consecutive plays. Scouts say he has the ability to battle in a phone both.

Reid had 20.5 sacks from the interior position in his Princeton career. He was a finalist for Ivy League defensive player of the year.

He started 37 of 40 games at Princeton finished with 168 tackes and 41 stops for losses, 11 quarterback pressures, seven blocked kicks, one safety and two fumble recoveries.

He’ll likely rotate in with Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley expected to start.

He’s from the Bronx, N.Y. His dad (Courton Reid) is a bishop, school principal and psychologist while his mom (Claudette Palmer-Reid) is a clinical hematologist, minister and licensed educator.

The Lions drafted cornerback Nevin Lawson (Utah State) and defensive end Larry Webster (Bloomsburg) in the fourth round today.
