Detroit Lions draft OLB Kyle Van Noy in second round (UPDATED)

ALLEN PARK — The Lions traded with the Seahawks to move up five spots in the second round to grab outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy. Seattle traded their second-round, fifth-round picks for the Lions’ second-round, fourth-round and seventh-round picks.

“There were a couple teams that we had a concern about,’’ Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said. “We started calling at the very top with Houston and worked our way all the way down until we got somebody where we had a good match as far as draft choices. But yeah, there were a couple teams that we thought were kind of hot spots for him.”

Van Noy was a teammate of Ezekiel Ansah’s at BYU which is where the Lions first noticed him while they were scouting Ansah, the first-round pick last year.

The two are friends and were roommates on the road at BYU.

In fact, immediately after the draft announcement Van Noy got a call from Ansah.
“He’s like a brother to me, so it’s good to be back on the same team, be able to go to work and chase the Super Bowl together,’’ Van Noy said.

Van Noy’s versatility is one reason the Lions were high on him.

“Five touchdowns, seven interceptions, 26 career sacks, the guy is very productive in every aspect of the game, so we liked everything about him,’’ Mayhew said.
