Lions place Bill Bentley on IR; Calvin Johnson, 3 others don't practice

ALLEN PARK — Cornerback Bill Bentley, who started three of the first four games, has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

The Detroit Lions rookie has been dealing with a shoulder injury. He practiced on a limited basis all last week, but was inactive against the Seahawks. Will possibly get more details when media talks to Jim Schwartz this afternoon.

Wide receiver Mike Thomas, who was acquired in a trade with Jacksonville, had a cold and windy welcome to the Motor City for his first practice on Thursday. The temperature is a cool, damp 41 degrees and the Lions practiced outside.

Four were absent: Calvin Johnson (knee), Cliff Avril (back), Louis Delmas (knee) and Amari Spievey (concussion).

Running back Mikel Leshoure, who had a personal day on Wednesday, returned.

Others back on the field for the media portion of practice were DeAndre Levy (hamstring), Corey Williams (knee), Justin Durant (quad) and Brandon Pettigrew (knee).

The Lions re-signed defensive back Don Carey who was in training camp and then released on Aug. 20.

Horrible luck. Let's be real, not sure how long they can continue to compete with this secondary. Not drafting a DB in the early rounds looks like it's going to come back and bite these guys in the behind. Easy to say now, as they had Barry and Houston penciled in before the draft...but this is getting ugly.
