Calvin Johnson will sit again

ALLEN PARK — No one will be happier to see wide receiver Calvin Johnson return to the field than quarterback Matthew Stafford.

“He’s a pretty easy target to hit. It will be great when he gets out there and makes some defenses adjust to him,’’ Stafford said.

Johnson didn’t play in the preseason opener a week ago and will sit out Saturday night’s preseason game at Cleveland.

Still, coach Jim Schwartz does not seem too concerned. Johnson has missed most of training camp with a bum right thumb.

“There’s been no setback, he had a bruised thumb and we were very cautious with it. ... The one thing we didn’t want to do was turn it into a lingering problem,’’ Schwartz said.

Johnson, who no longer wears a cast on his hand, participates in many of the individual drills but has not caught passes — other than a few soft ones — on a daily basis.

“You never have to worry about him work ethic-wise, he’s going to get all his work in,’’ Schwartz said.
