Sport fans should love online auction items to raise money for Tom Kowalski's charities

Tom Kowalski will not be forgotten.

While the Aug. 27 golf outing to honor charities in his name is sold out, there are still dinner-only tickets available.

Also, the online auction is up and runs through Sept. 4.

It will help raise money for Kowalski’s two favorite charities — Team Joseph (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) and Our Children’s Fund (West Bloomfield Schools) — along with Detroit Lions Charities and the Detroit Tigers Foundation.

The online auction started Sunday and runs through Sept. 4 at 2 p.m.

Go to KillerCares.org for information.

It includes:

— Lions suite for 12 people vs. Indianapolis Colts (and Andrew Luck) on Dec. 2.

Tom Kowalski honored with PFWA's McCann Award

Tom Kowalski was well respected in the Detroit area for his coverage of the Detroit Lions. But he was hardly a Michigan secret.

Kowalski, who covered the Detroit Lions for 30 years, has been named winner of the Professional Football Writers of America McCann Award which is given annually to a reporter who has made a long and distinguished contribution to pro football through coverage.

Kowalski died unexpectedly at age 51 last August.

As a member of the PFWA I nominated him for the award. As I stated then, I wasn’t putting him up for the award because he died, but rather because he did such a great job on the Lions’ beat for 30 years.

He had started as a sports writer at The Oakland Press in 1978 and then moved to Booth Newspapers in 1997.

He first started covering the Lions at age 21 and was there for the good years in the 1990s and many, many losing seasons.

Kowalski, also known as Killer, was well-known in the Detroit area for his writing, along with his WDFN radio show and appearances on WJBK Fox 2.

Also nominated were Bob Glauber, national football columnist for N.Y. Newsday; Ron Borges, Boston Herald columnist; Vinny DiTrani, retired from The Record; and Dave Goldberg, retired NFL writer for the Associated Press.

Kowalski’s friends have started a foundation in his honor. The first event will be a golf outing on Aug. 27. For more information, see www.killercares.org.

Classic Killer ramblings from Lions' 1990 win at Green Bay

In doing research for my book I was going through clips of the 1990 Lions’ season when one paragraph jumped off the page, it is a classic from our friend Tom “Killer” Kowalski.

The column was written after the Lions had just beaten the Packers 24-17 at Green Bay (yes, you read that right). It was two degrees with a wind chill of minus-33. A perfect day at Lambeau Field. Barry Sanders ran for 133 yards, Rodney Peete threw for 184.

The Lions tried to give it away with miscues — fumble, interceptions, a missed field goal, you name it. Detroit was down 17-10 at the end of the third and came back with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to win.

So Kowalski was telling fans not to feel guilty if a depression came over them in the second half because they thought for sure the Lions would lose.

This is the graph as it appeared in The Oakland Press on Dec. 23, 1990: “It’s conditioning. When the Lions go into a tailspin, we’ve been conditioned for 30 years to believe they’ll never pull it out. To watch a team, or career, crash and burn does not alarm us. We’re numbed by it. Oh, missed the playoffs again. Ah, another No. 1 Flop.’’

Pure Killer.

My book, “100 Things Lions Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die” will be published on Sept. 1. One of the chapters is about Tom.

Lions to honor Tom Kowalski in three ways

DETROIT — The Lions will honor the late Tom Kowalski, a long-time beat writer, in three ways. Lions president Tom Lewand made the announcement on Friday at the celebration of Kowalski’s life at Cheli’s Chili Bar. Kowalski died suddenly on Monday. He was 51.

The press lounge at the Allen Park practice facility will be named for Kowalski. Also the Lions will start a scholarship in Kowalski’s name for Lions’ media interns. In addition, the Lions will donate a portion of the concession proceeds from the home opener on Sept. 18 to Kowalski’s favorite charities, Team Joseph and Our Children’s Fund.

Bill Keenist, a Lions’ vice president also announced they had received a $1,000 check from Roger Goodell and the NFL for the Our Children’s Fund in Kowalski's name.

In lieu of flowers the family asked that donations go to Team Joseph (for supporting research for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy), 3050 Union Lake Rd. Suite 8F, Commerce Twp, MI 48382www.teamjoseph.info or Our Children's Fund (for Christmas gifts for local children in need) c/o West Bloomfield Schools, 5810 Commerce Rd., West Bloomfield, MI 48324.
