The Lions scouted Oklahoma well last year, no doubt about it. General manager Martin Mayhew said it was just coincidence that they drafted three Sooners in the same class. Here’s a look at where they stand:

1. WR Ryan Broyles is still rehabbing from ACL surgery seven months ago. Wouldn’t be a surprise to see him start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list which would keep him out of the first six games. It’s too early to tell, training camp will be his true test. When healthy he promises to be yet another offensive weapon.

2. DE Ronnell Lewis is one tough hombre. Rode bulls growing up in Dewar, Okla., and his nickname is Hammer because he can nail opposing players. He’s a lock to make the 53-man roster, might not see much time at defensive end this season, but that will come.

3. LB Travis Lewis has a chip on his shoulder because he was drafted in seventh round even though he was a four-year starter at Oklahoma and led the team in tackles all four years. His speed is the question mark here. He needs to make the roster with his special teams play. Talk to the guy for five minutes and you wouldn’t bet against him.

Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has been in the coaching business a long time, but he said he’s always struggled evaluating linebackers based solely on their college play.

So he wasn’t sure about Tahir Whitehead before the draft, but he certainly likes the fifth-round pick now.

“He’s much better than a fifth-round draft choice, he’s something,’’ Cunningham said on Monday.

Also seventh-round pick linebackerTravis Lewis, one of the three Oklahoma Sooners drafted by Detroit, has caught Cunningham’s eye.

“He doesn’t have the long speed at the Combine but he is really quick, he’s a very balanced athlete. He does a great job moving side to side, he’s brilliant,’’ Cunningham said.

Wide receiver Ryan Broyles, another Sooner, told Cunningham that Lewis is like that every day and he should know after playing with him for four years.

“They ran a conditioning test at the end of (Lions) rookie camp,’’ Cunningham said. “Travis was about 5 yards behind the leaders. Broyles looked at me, and Travis hit overdrive and won the thing. He said, ‘Coach that’s him, everyday he’s like that.’’’

After the final sprints were run to end the Detroit Lions’ three-day rookie minicamp on Sunday, coach Jim Schwartz observed that for some of the players it was their final time on a football field.

In particular he was talking about the 20 tryout players that went through the paces for the Lions.

Two of them made the cut. It was announced today (Tuesday) that free safety Sam Proctor and wide receiver Wallace Miles (North Carolina A&T) have been signed to one-year deals.

Proctor (6-foot, 220 pounds) becomes the fourth rookie from the Oklahoma Sooners. He joins former teammates WR Ryan Broyles, DE Ronnell Lewis and LB Travis Lewis — all of whom were drafted.

Also the Lions announced today that running back Jerome Harrison was placed on the Reserve/Non-football Illness list.

If you remember, last October the Lions tried to trade Harrison to Philadelphia, but he failed the Eagles’ physical due to a brain tumor. He had surgery to remove the tumor in October. No details of his condition were released.
