Detroit Lions special teams coach headed to Central Michigan

John Bonamego’s dream looks close to being a reality.

The Lions special teams coordinator is in talks to become the head coach at Central Michigan University, according to multiple sources including Nate Schneider of the Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun.

Bonamego played football for the Chippewas as a walk-on. He’s said many times his dream job is to be the head coach at his alma mater.

Bonamego, 51, would replace Dan Enos who left the Chippewas to become the offensive coordinator at Arkansas.

Bonamego has served as the Lions’ special teams coordinator for the past two seasons.

He coached for Maine, Lehigh and Army at the collegiate level. He has also worked as an NFL assistant for Jacksonville, Green Bay and New Orleans.
