Safety DeJon Gomes, who practiced for the first time Tuesday with the Lions, has a certain claim to fame.
Two years ago when he was with the Redskins, his hit was the reason that the Vikings’ Adrian Peterson tore his ACL.
The two will meet again Sunday if Gomes is active for the Lions, but it won’t be the first reunion. They played each other last season too.
“I mean it’s just going out there and playing some football,’’ Gomes said quietly. “I talked to him after the game last year. He understands we’re just out there playing football and freak things happen. I try to put it behind me.’’
Gomes, who started three games last season in Washington, seems to be a good fit for the Lions who needed safety depth.
“He had a little bit of experience. Good tackler. Can play some special teams. Has some starting experience. Good ball skills. Play free or strong,’’ Schwartz said. “We had a target on him and we were able to get the claim in on him and able to get him. We’ll get him up to speed as quickly as we can.”
Oddly enough Gomes, who is 23, said one of the safeties he’s looked up to is Louis Delmas and now they’re teammates.
“We’ve been talking, he’s been helping me out with the defense,’’ Gomes said.
“I actually watched him in college and the NFL as a safety to learn stuff from.
I like his game a lot, he plays intense and I’m glad to be with him.’’
