Fairley has surgery, expected to miss 'significant portion of training camp'

Rookie DT Nick Fairley, a first-round pick, underwent successful surgery on his injured left foot on Wednesday afternoon.

Fairley’s foot was stepped on during a pass-rush drill in Monday’s practice. On Tuesday his foot was in an orthopedic boot and on Wednesday he traveled to Charlotte, N.C., to meet with specialist Dr. Robert Anderson.

The team just released this statement:

“The examination of Nick Fairley’s foot today by Dr. Bob Anderson resulted in a diagnosis consistent with that of Lions’ team physicians that surgical correction was required. Accordingly, surgery was successfully performed this afternoon in Charlotte, N.C., by Dr. Anderson. Nick is expected to miss a significant portion of training camp.”

So Fairley had successful surgery. Now tell us -- just when is the last time you heard of a pro athlete having "unsuccessful" surgery?
