Lions: Only time will tell for Suh and McCoy
The NFL Combine wrapped up today and still the question lingers: Who is a better defensive tackle — Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh or Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy?
We really won’t know for a few NFL seasons. We’ll have a better idea after each completes his rookie year.
It’s crazy to make too much of their Combine bench press stats. Suh pressed 225 pounds for 32 straight times while McCoy managed just 23. Perhaps Suh is ahead in his offseason training, but that does not make him the better pick.
From watching them answer questions at the podium over the weekend, I know they are both personable, intelligent and very much competitors. That doesn’t make them better defensive tackles, but it doesn’t hurt either.
One of the interesting points about McCoy is that he was named a captain of the Sooners in his sophomore year.
If the Rams go after quarterback Sam Bradford (another Sooner), or make a trade down, the Lions could have their pick of Suh or McCoy at No. 2. It seems they couldn’t make a mistake by choosing either one of them. Only time will tell.
